OLD RESIDENT DIES AS RESULT OF FALL
William Verink Passed Away At His Home This Morning.
Fall Down Stairs At His Home Several Weeks Ago and Fractured His Skull-Is
Well Known.
As a result of injuries sustained by a fall on last Tuesday, March
5th, William Verink, a well known citizen of this county, passed away
this morning at 4:07 o'clock at his home, about seven miles north of
Letts. Mr. Verink is well known in this part of the county and his many
friends will be grieved to hear of his demise.
The exact cause of his death is thought to be due to injuries
received on his head when he fell down the stairs at his home last
Tuesday. He sustained other internal injuries which may have also caused
his death.
Mr. Verink was born in Winterswijk, Holland, in 1838, and came to
this country with his parents about 1850, stopping at Clymer, New York,
for about a year. He came to Iowa a year later, locating at Muscatine
and has resided in this county ever since with the exception of the time
served in the civil war, he being a member of the 2nd Iowa Cavalry, Col.
Horton's company. He has been one of the most successful farmers in this
county. He is survived by one son and one daughter, they being John
Verink, and prominent farmer of Seventy-Six township, and Mrs. Sue
Shellabarger, of Letts, IA., also a brother and sister, Manes Verink,
whose farm adjoins that of deceased, and Mrs. Jennie Schwartz, of St.
Louis, Mo. He also leaves three half sisters and a half brother, Mrs.
August Bloomer and Mrs. W.H. Holmes, residing northwest of this city,
Mrs. Mary Case, of Esterville, IA., and Fred Verink of Cedar Rapids. His
wife died only a few months ago.
Mr. Verink was a worthy, as well as patriotic citizen, and was held
in high esteem by everyone who knew him, possessing in a high degree the
most estimable qualities, as well as being a good citizen and neighbor.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from
the family residence.
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES
WILLIAM VERINK, farmer, Sec. 14; P.O. Letts; was born in Holland in 1838;
his parents, John H. and Hannah Verink, emigrated to this country in
1846; they first located in Chautauqa Co., New York; came to Muscatine in
1848, where his father still resides; his mother died soon after they
came to Muscatine. Mr. William Verink learned the business of painting,
which he followed till about 1869, when he purchased the farm which he
now owns, and where he has since resided. He married, February, 1869,
Fanny Simpson, a native of Muscatine Co., born in 1842; they have two
children - Susan E., born in 1869, and John T., born in 1876.
OBITUARY, PAPER UNKNOWN
William B. Verink was born in Winterswijk, Holland, June 18, 1839. He
came with his parents to this country when eight years of age, and after
living two years in New York, came to Muscatine, in 1849, where he grew
to manhood. When the civil war began he enlisted, joining Co. A, Second
Iowa Cavalry, serving his country three years and two months. He was on
February 28, 1967 united in marriage to Miss Fannie Simpson, to which
union two children were born, Mrs. Susan E. Shellabarger of Letts, IA.,
and John Verink of Seventy-Six township, Muscatine county, Iowa. Mrs.
Verink preceded him in death March 10, 1896. He was again united in
marriage on Oct. 3, 1900 to Mrs. Mary Berry of Cedar township, with whom
he lived happy until Jan. 26, 1907, when the death angel called her
home. Mr. Verink was a member of the G.A.R. post at Letts until is was
disbanded. He was also an honored member of the A.F and A.M. , holding
membership at Letts. His Masonic brethren attended the funeral in a body
and had charge of the services at the grave. As a result of injuries
sustained by falling down the cellar steps on Monday, March 4, Mr. Verink
passed away Tuesday morning, March 12, 1907. Mr. Verink was an
affectionate husband, a kind father, a good neighbor, a patriotic
citizen, a loyal friend, ever ready to lend a helping hand where it was
needed. He leaves to mourn his sudden and untimely demise Mrs. Susan E.
Shellabarger of Letts, and John Verink of Seventy-Six township, his
children, one brother, Maness Verink of Letts, IA., one sister Mrs. James
Schwartz of St. Louis, Mo., one half brother, Fred Verink of Cedar
Rapids, three half sisters, Mrs. Etta Bloomer of Lake township, Mrs. Mary
Case of Esterville, IA., and Mrs. Anna Holmes of Muscatine. The funeral
services were held at the Christian church near he home, at 2 o'clock
Wednesday, March 13, conducted by Rev R. Boyce and in spite of the very
bad roads, and a falling snow, the house was unable to accommodate the
large number of friends that came to pay the last tribute of respect to
